Moments Lost in Time
Moments Lost in Time
In December of 1689, two officers of the Danish army fought a duel while in Beverley, near York. The winner of the duel was executed, in accordance with the law of the army, and the two soldiers were buried at St. Mary's Church in Beverley.
The Danish army continued to Ireland, where it fought in the Battle of Boyne, supporting the King of England against the Catholic uprising.
After eleven years, what remained of the 10.000 man strong army returned to Denmark.
The cause of the two soldiers' duel has never been established.
The burial plaque of the two soldiers has been affixed to the south wall of the church. It reads:
Here two young Danish souldiers lye.
The one in quarrel chanc'd to die;
The others Head, by their own Law
With Sword was sever'd, at one Blow.
